Ballygarran - Cross Inscribed Stone

This stone is found within a ruined area which is believed to have been an early ecclesiastical site.

The scrub covered site, which has a diameter of  27 metres, is defined by the remains of a stone wall which is now reduced to scarp. It was traditionally believed to have been a burial ground with one surviving stone grave – marker in the interior which is raised and stony.

Located on the eastern perimeter, the Cross Inscribed Stone stands 0.8 metre tall with a plain equal armed cross. However, on closer examination, and in the right lighting, there certainly appears to have been an attempt to add another cross to conjoin with the main one above. The stone is oriented in a ENE direction.

Directions: From Waterford City take the R708 (Airport Road). Travel about 5km till you reach entrance for Airport. A further 0.75 km on from here there is a farm gate on the left. The site is visible just a short distance across the field from here.
