Ballynageeragh

This portal tomb which is located near the village of Dunhill, sits in flat pastures and has a capstone measuring 4 X 2.5 metres  This capstone now rests on the doorstone and at its rear there is a smaller capstone. With its  double capstone it bears similarities to the construction design at Knockeen.

The site was excavated in 1940 when among items found were flint pebbles, burnt bones and charcoal from a number of trees. Some restoration of the monument took place in 1944 when a modern concrete block wall (not visible in photo) was constructed to support the structure.  Unfortuneately, this work does detract somewhat from the overall appearance of the monument. Nonetheless, it stands as a fine example of its type.

Directions: Take the N25 from Waterford City and just after entering Kilmeaden take the R681 to your left. After about 5km take the second left. After a crossroads turn right and continue a short distance to you see a track on the right. Follow this track to where you can park. You will see the monument in the field ahead.
