Carrickavarahane

Overlooking Ballyscanlan lake and just 2km from the village of Fennor is this old irregular shaped green coloured stone.

It stands at the top of a S-W facing slope and is just 1.1 metres high x 1.2 x 0.7 meters.

It has rectangular cross section and is oriented in a E-W direction.

The stone appears well worn in places which is the result of livestock using it as a scratching post.

View from the West

Directions: Take the N25 from Waterford City till you reach the junction for the R682 turnoff (signposted) for Tramore. Travel about 3.5km on this road to the 4th crossroads. Just a short distance beyond this intersection take a road to the right downwards.

Travel about 1.5km on this narrow road till you come to the first big farmyard on the left. This is the location of Ballinaclough standing stone (in a field just outside the farmbuildings). A further 1 km along this road and a short distance from the road signposted to Carrickavantry resevoir, you will see the Carrickavarahane stone in a field to the right.
