Coumaraglinmountain - Enclosure 1

Located very close to the Coumaraglinmountain standing stone in the Araglin Valley is this fine dry stonewall enclosure.

The walls are 1.5 metres high and the construction has a diameter of 7 metres.

These enclosures, which are numerous in this area, were possibly used for Booleying which was the movement of livestock, usually cattle, from a permanent lowland village to higher summer pastures in the mountains. Here, people would live with their animals in these remote uplands during the summer months. This ancient practice, which  would have dated back to the  Early Medieval Period or even older, was still in use in the west of Ireland in the beginning of the 20th Century.
