Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Coumaraglinmountain - Pond Barrow

Coumaraglinmountain - Pond Barrow

Situated on a west facing slope in the Araglin Valley, this monument is listed as a Pond Barrow. It consists of a circular dished grass covered area with some heather and ferns measuring 24.5 metres in diameter and defined by an earth and stone bank, width 2.2 – 3.4 metres with a height ranging from 0.3 – 0.5 metres.

There is a gap (0.7m) at the SW end which may be original but the opening at the NE may not be. The enclosed area is quite swampy particularly towards the SW side.

The Barrow lies just 50 meters S-E from the Kerb Circle.

Only small amounts of human remains have been found in this type of barrow which suggests that they may have been used for ceremonial purposes rather than graves. Other possible uses include wells, a place for communication with the otherworld, a bathing spot or perhaps a location for gatherings on special occasions.

Directions: From Treenearla Commons at top of the Mauma Pass, continue on the descent towards Kilbrien. Take the first turn right which is after about 3.5 km. Follow this track into the valley for 1.5km till you reach a parking space on the right. From here, the monument is about 0.4 km uphill to the east.
