Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Croagh - Stone Pair

Croagh - Stone Pair

Set into a south facing stonewall bank and sheltered by a row of pine trees, these two stones are located in the stony townland of Croagh about a 1km from Dunhill village. The pair stand 2.5 metres apart and form a rough NE-SE alignment.

The West stone measures about 2 metres in height while the East stone, which appears to the eye as more taller and slender, is around 3 meters tall. They are set 2.5 metres apart.

The taller stone to the East leans backwards into the bank at an angle of about 60º. Having been incorporated into the bank, it's a bit difficult to assess the true height of both stones and they would most likely have been vertical when first erected.

The landowner has done an excellent job in clearing around the monuments, which are now clearly visible as you approach along the track.

The function of Stone Pairs is unknown. They may have had a commemorative or ritual role and are often referred to male and female because of the evident difference in their profiles.

Directions: From Waterford City take the N25 for Cork. Just before coming into Kilmeaden take the R681 veering left at a garage. About 4.5 km on take a left turn for Dunhill. Pass through the first crossroads and after 3 km you will come to a very narrow road on the left with a gate on the opposite side of the road. Drive down here about 0.5 km till the road becomes a rough track. Just after crossing a small river there is an old cottage where you can park. From here walk up the track about 300 meteres. You will see the stones in front of you.
