Crohaun

Crohaun or ‘Cruachan’ which translated means “Little Mountain Pile” is one of Waterford’s well known landmarks. This Cairn topped hill of the Comeragh mountain range can be see from a far and in recent times has become even more easily recognisable by the erection of a telecommunications mast near its summit.

It’s a special place with a sizeable Cairn some 30 metres in diameter and measuring 3 metres high. On the south side, a walkers shelter has been built from the cairn stones. Located at 484 meters above sea level, its spectacular hill top position would suggest that it may have been a passage tomb. The place does have a spiritual feel, and looking at the steep track which leads to the summit, you could almost imagine a funeral procession slowly making its way to the top.

The views from this site are truly fantastic. To the south is Dungarvan Bay with the projecting headland of Helvic reaching outwards to the sea. To the north there is superb vistas of the Monavullagh mountain range while also visible is the peaks of the Knockmealdowns.

Also visible below is the Treenearla Commons standing stone alongside the ancient track that snakes its way over the mountains.

In 1987 to celebrate Marian Year, the bright white cross of Peace & Hope was erected on the summit. For those not from Waterford, the touch of blue near the base of the cross completes the county’s sporting colours.

Directions: Travel south from Lemybrien on the N25. After 4km turn right at the second crossroads (signposted for Killrossanty). After a further 1.5km on this road turn left onto the ‘Comeragh Drive’. Then drive straight for 3.5 km till you reach the summit of the pass where there is left track to the base of Crohaun. Park here and walk to the summit.
