Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Deelishmountain - Cairn

Deelishmountain - Cairn

Just 2 km south east of Crohaun is the Cairn at Deelishmountain lying at the southernmost end of the Comeragh mountain range.

Located at an altitude of 350 meters (1148 feet) , this is quite a sizeable cairn which measures 21 x 19.5 metres  and is 2.4 meters high at its tallest point. Surrounded by heather and bracken it has a hollowed out centre and also a number of excavated wind shelters.

From the site one can clearly see the rising landmark of Crohaun mountain to the north west.

Note: Those wishing to make the climb to this Cairn are recommended to do so in early Spring before the full growth of  bracken is established on the slopes.

In summer when the bracken is at its highest, it  is a difficult and dangerous climb and descent as many large rocks and ledges are not visible to the walker.

Directions: From Lemybrien travel on the N25 for Cork. After 4km take the second right turn. Follow this road 1km till you come to a modern two storey house under the forestry plantation. Shortly after this turn in left and then another short distance to a forestry entrance on the right hand side of the road. Park here and walk this path keeping right till you see a rocky outcrop on the right side of the plantation. Ascend here, keeping the plantation on your left till you reach the rocks at the top. Here turn right and follow an old rough mountain path southwards along the top of the forest. After a short distance leave the path and climb to the summit.
