Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Garranmillon Lower

Garranmillon Lower

Another of Waterford’s Stone Pairs can be found at Garranmillon Lower where there are two standing stones which both bear Ogham inscriptions. As you approach the site they stand out on the skyline in a splendid location with the backdrop of the Monavullagh Mountains beyond and located just 20 metres north of an old rectangular church site.

The pair are just 2 metres apart on an E-W axis. The north stone which is the slimmer of the two is 2.05 metres tall while the south stone, which has a pointed tip and leaning is 1.8 metres in height.

Unfortunately, the Ogham inscriptions on both stones are now very worn and unreadable. However, in 1945 the inscriptions were read as follows: North stone - "GOSOCTAS MUCOI CORBI". South stone - "MELAGIA"

Directions: From Kilmacthomas travel on the N25 for about 3.5km. About 1km after the turn off for Mahon Falls you will pass a red hay barn on the right side of the road. A further 200 yards on is a driveway on the right up to a white bungalow which has a tree lined avenue. Ask permission here. The landowner is very approachable and helpful and will let you park by his house and give you further directions to the site which is very close and easy to find.
