Garranturton

Situated on a gentle East facing slope, this is quite an impressive stone, standing at 1.6 metres tall, measuring 0.8 metres wide and with a curved rounded top.

At first sight the stone appears to have a cupmark, but on closer examination this is seen as naturally formed, with the whole surface of the stone having a number of similar small holes.

Like many standing stones in Waterford this one is sited just 200 metres from what was the site of an old church and there are also reports that when this area is ploughed the soil becomes very dark. (possible Fulachta Fiadh – ancient cooking site)

Originally, there was another standing stone listed in the neighbouring field but this has now disappeared.

Directions: From the village of Kill take the road west for Ballylaneen. After 3.5km take the second left turn. A further 0.5 km up here is a road to the left where after 100 metres you will find the landowner’s two storey house. Ask for permission here.

Just up the road another 50 metres is a cow track on the left. At the top of this track you will see the stone in a field to the NE.
