Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Knockboy - Ogham Stones

Knockboy - Ogham Stones

At the site of this early Christian church are found four Ogham stones, three of which are incorporated into the structure as window lintels. A fourth stone (main photo) stands upright in the NE corner of the ruined church which once served the parish of Seskian.

In the north gable are two similar sizes stones  used as lintels. The upper lintel bears an Ogham inscription which reads CIRMAQIMUC while the lower stone reads VORTIGURN.

The lintel of the North window measures 1.78 meters in length  while the standing stone which is just over 1 metre tall has inscriptions which  translates as VEDABAR MQ LSMMOCOI ODR REA. It also bears a simple incised cross.

Directions: From Dungarvan take the R672 travelling NW for 3 km till you reach the junction with the N72.  Just up the road a short distance is the Master McGrath monument. Continue on this road ( R672) for about 7km till you come to a shop at a crossroads. A very short distance on further take a right turn. After travelling 1.5km up here take the first turn right which leads down a narrow road to the church.

Knockboy stone row is very near to here and both sites can be easily visited at the same time.
