Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Knockboy - Stone Row

Knockboy - Stone Row

Knockboy stone row is a three stone alignment which measures 4.7 meters in length.

It is thought however, that the original row was made up of at least four stones and possibly even more. All the stones are conglomerates and increase in height from the NE to the SW.

The smallest stone at the NE end is 0.65 meters tall and is rounded and rectangular. The centre stone which is crested, measures 1.25 metres while the tallest stone at the SW end is square and pointed and stands 1.6 meters tall. A possible fourth stone which is 1.85 meters in length, lies nearby. This may have featured as the missing stone in the row and have filled the gap (see photo below). The distance between the remaining stones from the NE end is 1.6 meters and 0.7 meters.

Directions: From Dungarvan take the R672 travelling NW for 3 km till you reach the junction with the N72.  Just up the road a short distance is the Master McGrath monument. Continue on this road ( R672) for about 7km till you come to a shop at a crossroads. A very short distance on further take a right turn. After about 2 km take the second right turn. Down here 0.75 km is a gate on the right side of the road. From here you can see the stones.
