Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Mapestown

Mapestown

This sturdy standing stone is located  on the outskirts of  Dungarvan in the townland of Mapestown, also pronounced  locally as ‘Mapstown’.

The conglomerate, which is stocky in shape, measures 1.6 metres tall and is 0.8 metres wide at its base. The stone is oriented in a NS-EW direction and has a crest which is oval in plan.

It’s easy enough to find as it is visible just over the hedge along a secondary road.

Directions: From Lemybrien travel south on the N25 for Cork. On entering the town of Dungarvan go to the 5th roundabout on the town bypass and turn right. A short distance on ( just past the old Waterford Crystal factory) turn right. Up here about 500m, the stone can be found in a field on the left.
