Munmahoge

This Wedge tomb, which is difficult enough to find, is part of a bank and field boundary. The boundary seems to cut through the tomb which is quite overgrown and makes it difficult to see from a distance. It’s situated on the top of a North facing slope and from it you can see the nearby Knockeen Dolmen across a small stream.

The tomb which is one of two Wedge tombs in Waterford, is aligned East- West with three side stones on each side and just one remaining roofstone. The gallery is 3 metres long and 0.9 meters wide. There is two large stones built into the bank which could have been used as roofstones on the original structure.

Interestingly, on the eastern side, for about 15 metres on each side of the tomb, the whole boundary/ditch is strewn with boulders, some quite large. The reason for this is difficult to say. Were they placed intentionally in that line for some significant reason or gathered up by farmers.

Sadly, this is another of Waterford’s monuments that is a bit forgotten and unkept. Perhaps because it lies in the shadow of the far more impressive and much more visited Knockeen tomb.

Directions: Take the N25 ( Cork Road) out of Waterford City till you reach the first major roundabout (Butlerstown roundabout). Turn left here and drive to the second roundabout (Sixcrossroads) and take right turn. A short way down go through the Sixcrossroads veering right. Continue to a Y junction and take left. After 1km you will come to another Y junction. Here go right. A short distance up here you will see large green coloured farm sheds with a gate opposite. Enter this field and you will see the field boundary directly in front about 200 yds away.. Looking a 60 degree angle to your left you will see a group of tall ash tress in the boundary. About 20 metres right of this you will find the tomb.
