Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Qurious Standing Stone

Qurious Standing Stone

Nollaigh Breathnach came across this Standing Stone while out walking recently.

The stone is located about 2 metres from a narrow roadway in the townland of Carriganard in the Six Cross Roads area near Waterford City.

At fist glance the tapered stone doesn’t appear to be very old or weathered and has a series of incised marks (seen in photo above) on its northern side which could have been the result of being shifted mechanically.

It stands 1.7 metres tall and X 0.7 X 0.3 m and is oriented practically E-W.

Its location is unusual and if it was erected by the landowner it begs the question – why here right next to the field boundary. Had it been used as a “Scratching Stone” for livestock it should show some signs of wear, but this is not so. How long it has been standing there is difficult to say also.

Is it an authentic standing stone or not, that is the question.
