Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Raithmaiden - Stone Row

Raithmaiden - Stone Row

Rathmaiden stone row is thought to have had had six stones originally, but today only four remain standing with two lying on the ground where they have fallen.

The remaining stones range in height form 1.2 metres to 1.8 metres and are oriented in a NW – SE direction. The overall length of the row is almost 16 metres.

One stone, which is the second from the SE end is out of line with the others being recessed over 1 metre further back into the hedgerow and almost invisible at first sight due to the heavy undergrowth.

Unfortunately, its incorporation into the field boundary has meant that the stone row is not so clearly defined and is quite overgrown with some of the stones frequently covered with ivy.

Directions: From Kilmacthomas take the road for Fews which is a journey of 2.5km. At the crossroads in Fews turn right. Drive 1km on this road till you see farmyard buildings on your right which are up a path along a row of tall evergreen trees. A further 500 metres on from here is a modern bungalow with black iron railings on its boundary wall along the road. Just beyond its front lawn, on the north side is a gate into a field on right side of road. Enter here and walk about 50 metres along with the hedgerow on your right. Then cross into the next field which is behind the house. The stone row is at the top of this field.
