Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Savagetown

Savagetown

Located on flat pastures 2 km west of Dunhill, Savagetown Portal Tomb is deeply embedded into an earthen bank/ field boundary which makes it difficult to see the full extent of the monument. However, what is visible is capstone measuring 3.4 metres long which rests on a portal – stone and a south facing sidestone. The backstone is also present.

It would be easy to visualise, that if the monument was standing alone in the landscape, it would make quite an impressive sight. About 250 metres N-E of the site once stood a Standing Stone which was 1.4 metres in height. This was removed in the 1980’s.

Directions: From Waterford City travel the N25 for Cork until you reach Kilmeaden. As you enter the village take the R681 signposted for Bunmahon which veers downwards to the left. Drive approx 6km to the third crossroads, after which take the first left turn. About 600 metres down this road there is an old cottage on the right hand side. A futher 30 yards beyond this there is a gate into a field on the right.

Walk 150 yards in the field, keeping to the field boundary and cottage on your right. At the sharp corner of the bank turn right and go through to the second field. There you will see the monument.
