Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Stone & Boulder

Stone & Boulder

This pairing of Standing Stone and Boulder I came across in the townland of Curraghkiely in a field next to the road.

The stone is about 1 metre high. Firstly, I thought the rock was a boulder burial, which is probably way off base - most likely an erratic.

There is a bend in the nearby river, so it could likely have been a place of ritual. All of the fields around the site are reclaimed and the amount of ring forts marked on the first OSI maps that have disappeared is scary, but the standing stone and boulder remain.
