Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments
Tooreen East - Standing Stones
In the clearing in Tooreen Woods where Ring Barrow (1) is located, one finds this pair of interesting standing stones. They are west of the Barrow and stand 14 metres apart. Though not very impressive, they both have very similar dimensions and form a line in an ENE - WSW direction.
The west stone (circled below) measures 0.7 x 0.4 and 0.35m high while the east is 0.6 x .04 and 0.4 metres tall with a small imbedded quartz stove at its western end.
One can only speculate about these stones and what significance they may have had. However, one could easily assume that they may have formed an important part of the archaeological complex in this particular area.

Directions: See Tooreen West Stone Row
From the Tooreen West Stone Row, walk about 100 metres west along the forest boundary till you see a marker pointing to an entrance to the forest going south. Enter the woods here and walk 160 metres south along the path till you reach the second clearance.
Here the stones can be seen over to the right.
