Treenearla Commons - Standing Stone

Treenearla standing stone (commonly referred to as the Mauma Stone), is easily seen as it stands as a lonely figure in a bleak and barren rock filled landscape.

Its situation is just off an ancient track across the mountain top. Measuring 2 meters tall and orientated NNE-SSW, it was most likely used as a guidance marker for those travelling on foot across this wild and rugged terrain.

The stone has an aged appearance, probably because of its position and the centuries of exposure to the harsh elements of wind and mists that frequently prevail in this open mountainous region. One of two Cairns to the north is visible from here, while just across the Maum Pass is the ancient cairn topped Crohaun mountain which dominates the horizon.

Directions: Travel south from Lemybrien on the N25. After 4km turn right at the second crossroads( signposted fro Killrosanty). After a further 1.5km on this road turn left onto the 'Comeragh Drive'. Then drive straight for 3.5 km till you reach a car park on the left. A short way past this is the summit of the Mauma Pass. Park here and walk to the stone which is visible to the right.
