Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments

Whitestown East

Whitestown East

Located 4km from the village of Clonea Power, this Portal Tomb has been in a collapsed state for many years and is now quite overgrown.

Built into a field bank, it lies on the NW side of a SW-NE valley and is accessed down a steep slope at the rear of a farmyard. The subcircular Roofstone, which ranges in thickness from 0.4 – 1.0 metres, measures 4.3 metres long and 3.3 metres wide This Roofstone is perched at an angle over the collapsed chamber which was probably facing South West. A few uprights remain underneath.

At the bottom of the field is a quiet rippling stream, as was common for many of these monuments to be located near a water source.

Directions: From the village of Portlaw take the road westwards for Clonea Power. After about 5km you will reach a series of sharp bends in the road at Casey’s Bridge. Just beyond here is an entrance on the left leading up to a farmhouse and buildings. Ask at the farm house for access to see the monument. The landowner will be happy to show you where the tomb is.
