Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments
Whitfield North - 'The Harp Stone'
This is one standing stone that really takes you by surprise. When you first enter the field from a narrow lane, its profile spectacularly looms on the horizon. You are immediately struck by the enormity of its presence in the landscape where exudes a true feeling of prehistoric.
It stands in the highest part of the hill and measures just over 3 metres in height. One side of the lichen covered stone is straight while the other overhangs and appears to be almost top heavy. This irregular shape is where the stone derives its name from as it resembles the form of a harp. Its orientation is ENE-SSW.
Standing alongside this impressive mass of stone, it seems very unlikely that this monument could be considered to have been put there as a “scratching stone”. It has to be rated among the finest monoliths in the county.
Directions: From Waterford City travel on the N25 for Cork. Pass the turnoff for Tramore (R682) and take the next left. Follow this road for about 3km until you can see a narrow shaded lane on the right. Park here and walk up this lane to the field.
