Exploring Waterford's Ancient Monuments
Woodstown - Standing Stone
Situated just off the road on the approach to Annestown beach is this old Red Sandstone monolith.
Today, it leans at almost 45°, but most likely was vertical when first erected, as the Waterford Archaeological Inventory of 1999 records it as “slightly leaning.”
So, it would appear that the years have been taking its toll on the monument.
The stone measures 1.4 metres in height and is 1 metre wide but as a result of its vertical decline, it’s now just 1.25 metres from it’s leaning tip to the ground. Viewed from the south it has the almost perfect appearance of a Gothic door. Its orientation is N-S.
Directions: From Tramore take the R675 for Dungarvan. About 3km after the village of Fenor, and with Annestown beach in sight, there is a road( on right side) which veers backwards to the North just beyond a farmyard. Here from a gate opposite this road, you can see the stone about 250 metres out in a field.
